Why plan the outfits at all

Monthly milestone photos, one picture on or around the same date each month for the first year, are a lovely record of how fast a baby changes. The pictures look best as a set when there is some consistency between them: the same spot, the same light and outfits that feel related. Without a plan, the twelve photos can end up looking like twelve unrelated snapshots.

There are three approaches that work well. Pick one at the start and stick with it.

Approach 1: the same outfit type each month

Photographing your baby in the same kind of outfit every month, such as a plain sleepsuit or a knit set, makes growth the star of the series. You can’t use one outfit for the whole year, because babies move through five sizes by 24 months, but you can repeat the same style in each new size. A teddy motif is a charming thread through the year: from a teddy-print sleepsuit like the Sky Blue Teddy & Stars Footed Sleepsuit in the early months, to the Oatmeal Teddy Ribbed Top & Jogger Set, to the Beige Teddy Dungarees & Striped Top Set once they are sitting up.

Approach 2: one colour through the year

Choose a single colour, such as sage, oatmeal or navy, and put your baby in something of that colour every month. The outfits can change completely, from sleepsuits to rompers to dungarees, but the colour ties the series together. This is the most flexible approach, because almost every wardrobe has pieces in its main colour, and it looks calm when the photos are shown side by side. Pick a colour that works in both summer and winter pieces, such as navy or oatmeal, since the year will include both seasons, and one that contrasts with the background you have chosen.

Approach 3: follow the seasons and occasions

  • Pick an outfit that matches what is happening that month: a warm knit for December, a light romper for June, an Eid outfit for the Eid month.
  • In Pakistan, that might mean a cosy set for the cold months in Lahore or Islamabad, something light during the summer heat and humid monsoon, and festive colours around Ramadan and Eid, 14 August or a family wedding.
  • This approach gives the most varied set of photos and doubles as a record of the year. Keep the background and pose the same so the series still hangs together.

Keep everything else consistent

  • The same spot each month, such as the same chair, blanket or corner by the window.
  • The same time of day, so the light matches.
  • The same prop for scale if you use one, such as a favourite soft toy placed beside your baby.
  • A plain background in a colour that contrasts gently with your outfit colours.

Planning around sizes

The awkward months are the ones where your baby is between sizes. An outfit that is too big swamps them and hides the growth you’re trying to show; one that is too tight pulls at the snaps. Check their length and weight against our size guide a week before each photo, and buy the next size a little ahead if they are near the top of the current one.

Lay the outfit out the night before, and take the photo early in the day when your baby is fed and rested. Browse our baby clothes by colour to plan the year.

Quick answers

Should my baby wear the same outfit for every monthly photo?

Not the same piece, since they will outgrow it, but the same style or colour in each new size keeps the series consistent and shows growth clearly.

What is the best colour for milestone photos?

A soft mid-tone such as sage, oatmeal, dusty rose or navy, repeated through the year, looks calm and photographs well in most light.

When is the best time of day for monthly photos?

Pick a time when your baby is usually fed and content, often mid-morning, and keep to it so the light matches from month to month.

What if my baby outgrows the outfit I planned?

Swap to something in the same colour or style in the next size. As long as the colour or theme stays consistent, a different piece won’t break the series, and the change in size is part of the story.
