Seasons in Pakistan
Does a baby in Karachi need winter clothes?
Karachi’s winter is mild but not warm: what a baby needs for cool evenings, the occasional cold spell and trips north, without buying a cupboard of heavy knits.
The short answer: a little
Yes, but far less than a baby in Lahore, Islamabad or Quetta. Karachi’s winter, roughly December to February, is mild: afternoons are often warm enough for short sleeves, while evenings and nights turn pleasantly cool with the sea breeze. Most homes have no heating at all, so the few genuinely cold nights feel sharper indoors than the numbers suggest.
A Karachi baby needs a handful of long-sleeved pieces, one or two warm layers and a couple of warmer sleepsuits. Heavy snowsuits and thick sherpa can stay on the shop shelf unless you are travelling north.
A Karachi winter day
Karachi winter days follow a pattern that makes dressing easy once you know it: cool at the edges, warm in the middle. The swing between a sunny afternoon and a breezy evening is the thing to plan for, more than the cold itself.
- Morning: cool enough for a long-sleeved top and trousers, or a bodysuit with a light cardigan.
- Afternoon: often warm, especially in the sun. Take the cardigan off, and short sleeves may be enough.
- Evening: the breeze picks up and the temperature drops. Long sleeves go back on, plus socks.
- Night: a footed or long-sleeved sleepsuit, with a light blanket or sleeping bag on cooler nights.
The cold spells
A few times most winters, cold, dry winds from the north and west bring several nights that feel properly cold in Karachi. Houses without heaters, tiled floors and open windows make those nights uncomfortable for everyone. This is when the warm pieces earn their place: a vest under a warm sleepsuit, a sweater for the evening, closed windows on the windy side and a rug over the floor where your baby plays. Once the wind drops, you are back to the usual mild routine within days.
Cold spells can come with dust and dry air too, which may leave a baby’s lips and cheeks chapped. Keep feeds frequent, keep the windows on the windy side shut, and ask your doctor if dry patches become red or itchy. Evenings by the sea at Clifton or Seaview feel colder than inland, so pack the cardigan and socks for a beach walk even when the afternoon was warm.
What to have in the cupboard
The fabric content of the sets named below is still being confirmed, so ask us if you want to check how warm they are. Keep the numbers sensible, since your baby may outgrow winter pieces before next December.
- Three or four long-sleeved outfits, such as a top-and-jogger set like our Navy Moon & Stars Henley & Jogger Set.
- A long-sleeved top under dungarees for daytime; the Beige Teddy Dungarees & Striped Top Set comes with its own striped long-sleeved top.
- One or two cardigans or sweaters for evenings and cold spells.
- Two or three warmer footed sleepsuits for nights.
- A few pairs of socks. That is usually enough.
If you are travelling north
Winter is wedding season, and many Karachi families spend part of it in Lahore, Islamabad or Peshawar, where nights are far colder and outdoor functions go on late. For those trips, add a proper outer layer such as a hooded or sherpa jumpsuit, mittens and a warm hat for outdoors. See the guide on dressing a baby for winter in Pakistan.

Quick answers
Does my baby need a hat in Karachi’s winter?
Only outdoors on a cold, windy evening, and never indoors or for sleep. Most Karachi winter days don’t call for one.
Should I buy a snowsuit for a baby in Karachi?
Not unless you are travelling north or to the hills in winter. A cardigan and warm sleepsuits cover Karachi’s coldest nights.
What should my baby sleep in during a Karachi winter?
A long-sleeved or footed sleepsuit, with a vest underneath and a light blanket or sleeping bag on the colder nights. Check their chest or the back of their neck to judge.
Do I still need the fan or AC in a Karachi winter?
Often not at night, though some afternoons stay warm enough for a fan. If you switch the fan off for the first time in the season, that is usually the moment to move your baby into a warmer sleepsuit.
