Seasons in Pakistan
Buying for next season: which size will fit then?
How to work out what size your baby will be when winter or summer actually arrives in Pakistan, so the clothes you buy early still fit when the weather turns.
The trap of buying early
Buying winter clothes in September or summer clothes in March makes sense: you are not rushing when the first cold night or the first 40°C day arrives. The catch is that a baby grows through a size or more in the months between buying and wearing. A warm set bought in your baby’s current size in October can be snug by January, which is exactly when you need it most.
The fix is to buy for the size your baby will be in the middle of the season, not the size they are now. Pakistan’s seasons make this easier than in many places: winter on the plains is short and predictable, roughly December to February, so you are aiming for a fairly narrow window.
Work it out in three steps
Our sizes run 0–3M, 3–6M, 6–12M, 12–18M and 18–24M, and the size chart by age, height and weight explains how they line up.
- Measure your baby’s height and weigh them, and find where they sit on our size guide. Babies vary a lot, so this matters more than age alone.
- Count forward to the middle of the season you are buying for: around the end of December for winter on the plains, around June for summer.
- Choose the size that covers your baby’s age at that point. If they are already at the top of their current size, or growing fast, go one up.
Worked examples
- A four-month-old in September will be around seven months by the end of December: buy winter clothes in 6–12M.
- A newborn due in November will be two or three months old by late January: buy mostly 0–3M, with a couple of 3–6M pieces for February.
- A ten-month-old in March will be around thirteen months by June: buy summer rompers in 12–18M.
- A baby of eighteen months in October will be about twenty-one months in January: 18–24M, and consider going up if they are tall.
Which pieces to size up
- Outerwear and jumpsuits: yes. They go over other layers, so a little room helps. A hooded jumpsuit like our Grey Bear Hooded Jumpsuit needs space for a knit set underneath.
- Knit sets with ribbed cuffs: a size up is usually fine, because cuffs can be turned back and joggers sit comfortably with a little extra length.
- Sleepsuits: size up only modestly. Sleepsuits that are far too big bunch up, and feet slip about inside.
- Summer rompers: fit matters less, but snaps should close easily over the nappy.
Check the fit when it arrives
Try every piece on as soon as it arrives, even if your baby won’t wear it for months. Exchanges are possible within 7 days for unused pieces in their original condition with the original bill, so you can’t swap a size when the season finally comes round. Our delivery and exchanges page has the details. If your baby is between sizes, a custom piece made to their measurements, with a little growing room, is another option; we confirm price and making time when you ask.
Timing the switch
When the season does arrive, our post on when to switch to winter clothes helps you move between wardrobes without being caught short.
If you are buying as a gift for a baby in another city, remember their season may differ from yours. A Karachi family buying for a cousin in Quetta, or an overseas relative buying for a baby in Lahore, should think about that city’s winter, not their own.
Quick answers
Should I buy winter clothes a size bigger?
Usually yes, if you are buying a few months ahead. Work out how old your baby will be in the middle of winter and buy for that age, checking height and weight on the size guide.
My baby is between sizes. Which should I pick for winter?
Go for the larger size, especially for knit sets and outer layers, which will be worn over other clothes. Check height and weight on the size guide rather than going by age alone.
What if the next-season clothes are too big when the weather turns?
Roll the cuffs, keep the biggest pieces for later in the season, and use them over layers. A slightly big knit is more useful than one that is too small.
Can I exchange a size months later, when the season starts?
No. Exchanges are only possible within 7 days, for unused pieces in their original condition with the original bill. Try everything on as soon as it arrives.
