What changes around six months

Six months is a turning point. Many babies are sitting up, or nearly, and rolling in every direction. They grab at everything, drool while teething, and many families start introducing solid food around this age. The newborn days of lying still in a sleepsuit are over.

It is also a time when gifts dry up. The rush of newborn presents has passed, and the first birthday is still months away. A well-chosen gift at six months fills a real gap, especially in the size that many families find themselves short of.

The size they need next

Most six-month-olds are moving into 6–12 months, and that is the natural size to give. It is a long range, covering half a year of growth, so a piece in 6–12 months will usually fit for several months. A baby who is long or heavy for their age may already be near the top of it; in that case, 12–18 months is a sensible choice.

Our size guide lists heights and weights.

Pieces that suit sitting up

Once a baby sits, one-piece sleepsuits can bunch at the tummy and two-piece sets start to make more sense. A top and joggers stay in place while the baby leans and reaches, and you can change the bottom half without disturbing the top.

The Navy Moon & Stars Henley & Jogger Set and the Dusty Rose Ribbed Henley & Jogger Set are both easy everyday choices. For a baby who is starting to crawl, the Beige Teddy Dungarees & Striped Top Set covers the knees, and its button sides help with nappy changes.

Ready for mess

With weaning comes food on everything. Mid-tone and darker colours, such as navy, sage, beige and dusty rose, hide marks between washes better than white or cream, and a set with two pieces means only the top has to change after a messy meal. Parents at this stage are often grateful for more of the practical everyday pieces rather than one precious outfit they are nervous to use.

Rompers still have a place

In the hot months, a short-sleeve romper is still one of the most comfortable things a six-month-old can wear. The Sky Blue Sailboat Polo Romper has snaps underneath for quick changes and a polo collar that looks smart for visits. Footed sleepsuits remain useful at night, too, so don’t rule them out entirely.

Match the season it will be worn in

A 6–12 months piece bought at six months will be worn for up to half a year, often across a change of season. A baby turning six months in October will wear it through winter, so a knit set is ideal. One turning six months in April will be in that size through the heat and the monsoon, so rompers and lighter sets make more sense.

Occasions around six months

For many babies, six months coincides with their first Eid, a family wedding or a trip to see relatives. A dressier set or a small custom kurta or frock can make a lovely gift for those moments; we take custom stitching orders through our custom orders page. Our post on sizing an Eid outfit ordered months ahead has more on timing.

Quick answers

What size clothes does a six-month-old wear?

Most are in 6–12 months. Bigger babies may be near the top of that range already, in which case 12–18 months will last longer.

Are sleepsuits still useful at six months?

Yes, especially at night. During the day, many parents switch to two-piece sets and rompers because they stay in place better once a baby sits up.

Is six months too early for dungarees?

Not if the baby is sitting or starting to crawl. Dungarees with button sides make nappy changes easier and protect the knees on the floor.

What if the baby is small for six months?

Choose 6–12 months anyway; it will fit soon and last a long time. If you know the baby is still in 3–6 months, a gift in 6–12 months will be ready when they move up.
