Why families mark it

A baby’s first Ramadan is not a religious milestone for the baby, but for the family it often feels like one: the first sehri with a baby awake in the small hours, the first iftar with an extra person at the dastarkhwan, the first time grandparents see the baby at a Ramadan gathering. Many parents like to mark it with one special outfit and a photo.

Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, depending on the moon sighting, so a baby born this autumn will be a few months old.

Moon and stars

The crescent moon is so tied to Ramadan, from the moon sighting to Chand Raat, that a moon-and-star print makes an obvious and lovely first-Ramadan outfit. The Navy Moon & Stars Henley & Jogger Set has a moon and star print on a soft knit, with a three-button henley and joggers. For a younger baby, the Sky Blue Teddy & Stars Footed Sleepsuit has a teddy and star print with front snaps, and is comfortable for night-time sehri photos.

Navy also photographs well in the warm lamp light of an iftar table, and hides the odd drip of milk better than white.

If you prefer something plainer, a solid outfit in navy, white or cream with a small embroidered crescent gives the same feeling without a print.

Personalising it

  • The baby’s name on the chest, so the photo tells its own story in years to come.
  • The year, such as “Ramadan 2027”, on the cuff or back hem, where it is a quiet detail.
  • A small crescent or star motif beside the name.
  • Initials only, if you prefer something simple.
  • Custom embroidery starts from Rs 500, and you can ask for any of these on any of our pieces through custom orders.

When to wear it

Pick one or two moments rather than trying to use it all month. The first iftar dawat at the grandparents’ is a popular choice, as is a photo on the first night of Ramadan or on Chand Raat. Some families save it for the photo at the iftar table on the last evening, then move on to the Eid outfit the next morning.

A sehri photo is a quieter alternative: a sleepy baby in a moon-and-star sleepsuit in lamp light before dawn is a picture many families treasure. Keep it short and let the baby go straight back to sleep.

If you are wearing it to a gathering, such as an iftar dawat, plan for spills and the late drive home.

Sizing for a month of growth

Ramadan lasts a month, and a young baby can move up a size in that time. If you want the outfit to fit on the first night and still work for Eid photos, choose the next size up if your baby is near the top of their current one. Check length and weight against our size guide.

If the baby is only a few weeks old during Ramadan, a sleepsuit is the most practical keepsake, since it can be worn on any day of the month, for sleep as well as for photos.

Keeping it afterwards

Wash it gently before storing, following the care label, and let it dry completely. Our guide on washing embroidered kids’ clothes helps protect the embroidery. Store it folded in a clean cotton bag, away from damp, with a note of the date and the occasion.

Quick answers

What should a baby wear for their first Ramadan?

Anything comfortable works. Many families choose a moon-and-star print or add the baby’s name and the year in embroidery, to make one outfit a keepsake for photos.

Can you embroider “Ramadan” and the year on a baby outfit?

Yes, ask through our custom orders page. Custom embroidery starts from Rs 500, and the exact price is confirmed when you ask.

What size should a first-Ramadan outfit be?

Size for the baby at the end of Ramadan if you also want it for Eid photos. If they are near the top of their size, go one up.

Is a first-Ramadan outfit a good gift?

Many families appreciate it, especially grandparents buying for a first grandchild. Choose a size that will fit through the month, and add the name if the parents have shared it.
