Who the shehbala is

At many Pakistani weddings, a young boy from the groom’s family, often a younger brother, nephew or cousin, is chosen as the shehbala. He accompanies the groom in the baraat, rides or walks beside him, and sits next to him on the stage. In many families he is dressed as a small version of the groom, which makes him one of the most photographed people of the night.

Customs vary. Some families don’t have a shehbala at all, some choose an older boy, and some dress him in a coordinating outfit rather than a copy of the groom’s.

Because he stays close to the groom all evening, he appears in the entry, the stage photos, the family portraits and often the video, for hours at a stretch. That is why comfort matters as much as the look.

The usual look

  • A sherwani or achkan in the groom’s colour or a coordinating shade, with lighter embroidery than the groom’s.
  • A churidar pajama or a straight shalwar underneath.
  • A kulla with a turban (pagri), or a simpler cap, often matching the groom’s headwear.
  • Khussay or other smart shoes in a colour that goes with the sherwani.
  • Sometimes a small garland or a brooch on the sherwani, as the family prefers.

Match the groom, but lighter

A child’s sherwani doesn’t need the groom’s full embroidery. Heavy work weighs a lot on a small frame, scratches the arms, and makes a long night harder. Most families get the matching effect from the same colour and one shared detail, such as the same collar border, buttons or turban fabric.

If the groom’s outfit is being made elsewhere, ask the family for a clear photo in daylight and, if possible, a small cutting of the fabric or the turban cloth. That makes matching the shade much easier.

Comfort for a very long night

  • A soft lining inside the sherwani, so embroidery doesn’t rub.
  • A collar that fits with a finger’s width to spare. A tight band collar is the most common complaint.
  • Room across the chest and shoulders for sitting on the stage and climbing in and out of cars.
  • An elasticated churidar or shalwar, so bathroom trips are quick.
  • A light kurta underneath that he can stay in once the sherwani comes off after the photos.
  • A turban that is secure but not tight. Plan for it to come off during dinner.

A practice run at home

Have him wear the full outfit, including the turban or cap and the shoes, at home for half an hour a few days before the baraat. He gets used to the collar and the headwear, and you spot anything that pinches, slips or needs a stitch while there is still time to fix it.

If he walks with the groom at the mehndi or a rehearsal as well, let him wear the sherwani then too, so it isn’t new and stiff on the big night. New khussay benefit from the same treatment: a few evenings of wear at home softens them considerably.

Ordering a custom outfit

We stitch custom children’s clothes, including eastern wear, and our size guide covers custom sizes from 2–3Y up to 11–12Y. Measure him following our guide on how to measure a child for a shalwar kameez, then send the measurements, the photo of the groom’s outfit and the date through custom orders. You will get a quote before anything is made, and making time is confirmed when you ask, so start as soon as the family has decided.

For what the rest of the children wear at each event, see our guide to kids’ outfits for a Pakistani wedding, and for the baraat night itself, our post on choosing a sherwani, prince coat or waistcoat by age.

Quick answers

How old is a shehbala usually?

There is no fixed age. Families often choose a young boy who can sit through the evening, and it depends on who is in the family.

Does the shehbala have to wear the same colour as the groom?

Many families match the colour, but a coordinating shade with one shared detail, such as the turban fabric, works just as well in photos.

Can you match a shehbala sherwani to the groom’s?

Send a daylight photo of the groom’s outfit and, if possible, a fabric cutting through our custom orders page, and we will quote for a matching or coordinating piece.

What should the shehbala wear once the photos are done?

Many boys change out of the sherwani after the stage photos. A light kurta underneath, or a clean kurta shalwar kept in the car, keeps him comfortable for dinner and the rest of the night.
