Winter clothes for a one-year-old in Pakistan: what to buy
A winter wardrobe for a baby aged 12 to 24 months who is walking: how many sets, dungarees or joggers, outer layers that let them move, and what to skip.
What changes at one
For a one-year-old who is walking, a Pakistani winter wardrobe needs about five to seven two-piece sets, two pairs of dungarees, plenty of vests and socks, a cap, and one warm outer layer they can walk in. Buy mostly separates in 12–18M or 18–24M, because a walker needs quick changes and clothes that cope with floors and climbing. Leave most one-pieces behind, apart from sleepsuits for night.
Between 12 and 24 months, children go from wobbly first steps to running, climbing onto the sofa and squatting to inspect everything on the floor. Knees and seats wear out first. A toddler who refuses to lie still for a nappy change makes leg snaps frustrating, and many start sitting on the potty this year, which favours bottoms that simply pull down.
A short winter list
This list assumes you wash every couple of days and live somewhere with a proper winter, such as Lahore, Islamabad or Peshawar.
- Five to seven two-piece sets whose tops and joggers mix and match, so one stained top doesn’t retire a whole outfit.
- Two pairs of dungarees, with long-sleeve tops to wear underneath.
- Six to eight long-sleeve vests as a base layer.
- Eight or more pairs of socks with grip, because socks vanish.
- Three or four sleepsuits or pyjama sets for night.
- A cap or two for going out, and mittens only if your child will keep them on.
- One outer layer they can walk in: a jacket, a zip-up hooded top, or a hooded jumpsuit that doesn’t restrict their knees.
Sets, dungarees or jumpsuits?
Two-piece sets do the everyday work. You change one half at a time, and pull-down joggers suit early potty attempts. The Sky Blue Dinosaur Sweatshirt & Grey Jogger Set has front pockets and a dinosaur on one knee, exactly the kind of detail a one-year-old points at and names. Thicker sets such as the Sage Cable-Knit Teddy Sweater & Jogger Set are warm enough indoors with just a vest underneath, and its shoulder buttons help it over a toddler’s head. You’ll find more in our baby sets.
Dungarees are for play, outings and photos. The bib keeps the back covered when they bend over, and the straps stop trousers sliding down. The Beige Teddy Dungarees & Striped Top Set has button-on straps and buttoned sides, which makes dressing a wriggling toddler quicker.
Jumpsuits are only for going out now, and only if your child can bend their knees and walk freely in them. A jumpsuit with covered feet can be slippery on marble, so check the soles or put shoes over the top.
Adjust for your city
Scale the list up or down for where you live. For layers by temperature and room, see our guide to dressing a baby for winter in Pakistan.
- Karachi: winter is short and mild. Halve the warm layers; light sets, a sweatshirt and one jacket for evenings out are plenty.
- Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan: cold, foggy mornings and nights from late December into January. Use the full list.
- Islamabad and Peshawar: colder nights, and many homes with tiled or marble floors. Add a couple of thermals, thicker socks and a heavier outer layer.
- Quetta and the north: well below freezing at night. A thermal under every set, a properly warm outer layer, and a cap and mittens outdoors.
One or two dressy outfits
Winter brings plenty of dawats and family gatherings, so a toddler may need two or three dressy outfits before spring. Plan sizes for the date rather than for today: a child in 12–18M in October may well be in 18–24M by March. Our post on which size your baby will wear next winter explains how to estimate. For a new walker, a short kurta with an elasticated pajama, or a frock with leggings, works far better than anything long or stiff.
What to skip
Before you shop, go through what still fits; our wardrobe audit for moving up a size helps you see the real gaps. Then leave these off the list:
- Heavy, stiff jackets that pin the arms; toddlers either refuse them or topple over in them.
- Booties once they walk. They slip on tiles; socks with grip indoors and soft shoes outdoors are safer.
- A drawer full of one-piece rompers with leg snaps.
- Big packs in one size bought all at once, since a one-year-old can move up a size halfway through winter.
Quick answers
How many winter clothes does a one-year-old need?
Roughly five to seven day outfits, two pairs of dungarees, three or four sets of night clothes, plenty of vests and socks, and one outer layer. If you wash more often, you can manage with fewer.
Is a jumpsuit still practical once a baby walks?
For going out, yes, as long as they can bend their knees and walk freely in it. For all-day wear, separates are easier, because toddlers resist lying down to be changed.
Should I buy 18–24M for this winter?
If your child is near the top of 12–18M now or is long for their age, yes. Otherwise buy mostly 12–18M, with one or two pieces in 18–24M for late winter.
