What changes between 6 and 12 months

For a baby aged 6 to 12 months in a Pakistani winter, the answer is both: two-piece sets for the day, footed sleepsuits for the night, and a hooded jumpsuit or jacket for going out. Sets suit sitting and crawling babies because you can change one half at a time and the trousers don’t twist round as they move. Five or six sets, four sleepsuits, vests, socks and one outer layer cover most homes.

These six months bring big changes in how a baby moves, and what works at six months can be a nuisance by ten.

  • Around 6–7 months, sitting up: a top long enough not to ride up at the back when they lean forward matters more than anything else.
  • Around 8–9 months, crawling or bottom-shuffling: knees and the floor take over, and a one-piece with leg snaps twists round the body.
  • Around 10–12 months, pulling up, cruising and perhaps first steps: they resist lying down, so more changes happen standing up, which is far easier with separates.

Two-piece sets or one-pieces?

In the day, two-piece sets. Change the top after a feed or a spill and leave the joggers on, or swap the bottoms after a leak without pulling the top off a baby who is busy playing. Joggers with ribbed cuffs stay over the ankles when a baby crawls. Our baby sets all come in 6–12M.

At night, footed sleepsuits. With the feet built in, there is nothing to kick off in the small hours, and snaps down the front make a 3am change quick in the dark.

For going out, a hooded jumpsuit or a jacket over the set, taken off once you are indoors. Every baby reaches these stages at their own pace, so dress for what yours is doing, not the month on the label; dressing your baby stage by stage looks at each one.

Cold floors and crawling

Marble and tiled floors, common in Pakistani homes, stay cold all winter, and a crawler spends hours on them. A rug or a play mat helps more than any outfit, but clothes matter too.

  • Ribbed ankle cuffs keep joggers from riding up to the knee as they crawl.
  • A top long enough to overlap the waistband, or a bodysuit underneath, keeps the lower back covered when they reach forward.
  • Socks with grip on the sole help when they start pulling up on furniture; plain socks slide on marble.
  • Joggers need room in the seat for a nappy. If yours keep slipping, see why baby joggers keep slipping down.
  • Textured knits such as waffle and cable feel warmer on the floor than thin jersey.

A short 6–12M list

For a baby in Lahore, Islamabad or Peshawar, with washing every couple of days:

  • Five or six two-piece sets, a mix of thinner and thicker knits.
  • Four footed sleepsuits.
  • Five or six long-sleeve vests or bodysuits.
  • Six or more pairs of socks with grip.
  • One outer layer: a hooded jumpsuit or a jacket.
  • A cap for outings.

Choosing the sets

Give each set a job. A dark print such as the Navy Moon & Stars Henley & Jogger Set hides spills and suits evenings at relatives’ houses. The Sage Waffle-Knit Henley & Jogger Set has a textured surface that looks cosy on cold days, and the Dusty Rose Ribbed Henley & Jogger Set has a buttoned henley neck that opens up for easier dressing. Henley buttons and stretchy necklines matter at this age, when babies arch and twist as you pull a top over their head.

In Karachi, swap two of the sets for lighter ones, and you may only need the outer layer for evenings. In Quetta and the north, add a thermal or two and a heavier outer layer. If your baby is six or seven months now, buy 6–12M; if they are already nine or ten months, expect to need the next size before the cold ends. A day of layers

A winter day in the plains swings from a cold, foggy morning to a sunny afternoon and back to a chilly evening, often with the heater on for only part of it. Rather than dressing once, add and remove one layer at a time, and check warmth at the chest or the back of the neck rather than the hands. Our guide to dressing a baby for winter in Pakistan gives night layers by room temperature.

  • Morning: vest, two-piece set and socks, plus a cardigan if the room is cold.
  • Midday: if the sun is out or the room has warmed up, the cardigan comes off.
  • Evening: the cardigan goes back on as the house cools; for a trip out, add the outer layer and a cap.
  • Bedtime: swap the set for a footed sleepsuit over a vest, and adjust warmth with a baby sleeping bag rather than loose quilts. No hat in the cot.

Quick answers

How should I dress a six-month-old in winter?

In a long-sleeve vest, a two-piece set and socks for the day, with a cardigan or hooded jumpsuit for cold rooms and outings. At night, a vest under a footed sleepsuit. Check warmth at the chest or the back of the neck, not the hands.

Are rompers or two-piece sets better for crawling?

Two-piece sets, for most babies. Each half can be changed separately, and joggers with ribbed cuffs stay down at the ankles. A footed sleepsuit is still the easier choice at night.

How many winter sets does a baby need?

Five or six two-piece sets is enough for most families who wash every couple of days, plus four sleepsuits for night. If you wash less often, add one or two more.
