Why mild days are tricky

Cold days and hot days are easy to dress for. The hard ones are in between: a cool morning, a warm midday, a breezy evening, and an air-conditioned room somewhere in the middle. In Pakistan that describes much of the year in Karachi, and the weeks of spring and autumn in Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar and further north, roughly February to March and October to November, though every year is different.

A two-piece knit set is one of the most useful things a baby can wear on days like these, because the top comes off without undressing the rest of your baby.

Choose the lighter knits

  • Ribbed knits, like our Dusty Rose Ribbed Henley & Jogger Set, are close-fitting and light, and work well as the only layer over a bodysuit.
  • Waffle knits, like our Sage Waffle-Knit Henley & Jogger Set, trap a little air but stay breathable thanks to the open texture.
  • Save thick cable knits and wool for properly cold days; on a mild afternoon they can be more than your baby needs.
  • Henley tops are handy: open the buttons at midday for a little air, do them up again when the breeze picks up.

A peel-off plan for the day

The idea is that each layer can come off on its own. A one-piece that is too warm at noon has to come off entirely; a set lets you adjust in seconds, often without waking a sleeping baby.

  • Morning: short-sleeved bodysuit, knit set, and a cardigan if it is cool outside or you are heading out early.
  • Midday: cardigan off. If the sun is out and the room is warm, the knit top can come off too, leaving a bodysuit and joggers.
  • Afternoon in an air-conditioned room: the knit top goes back on.
  • Evening: top on, cardigan ready for a walk or a drive.
  • Keep the cardigan and top in the changing bag, so you are never stuck with only the layer your baby left home in.

Karachi’s winter

Karachi’s winter is mild, with cool evenings, especially near the sea. A knit set over a short-sleeved bodysuit is usually enough for the day, with a cardigan for the evening sea breeze. Heavy winter outerwear bought for a trip north is rarely needed at home. If you are visiting family in Lahore or Islamabad over December or January, pack warmer layers for the evenings there.

Karachi’s humidity also means knits can take a while to dry, so it helps to have one more set than you think you need in rotation.

Spring and autumn up north

In the shoulder seasons in Lahore, Islamabad or Peshawar, mornings and nights can be genuinely cold while afternoons feel like summer. Dress for the morning in layers you can remove, rather than for the afternoon. Homes with thick walls and tiled floors can stay cool inside even on sunny days, so check how the room feels, not the forecast. On hill-station trips, even in summer, evenings can be cold enough for a knit set and cardigan.

Checking your baby is comfortable

Feel your baby’s chest or the back of their neck rather than their hands or feet, which are often cooler than the rest of them. If the skin feels hot or sweaty, take a layer off; if it feels cool, add one back. The NHS suggests dressing a baby in about one more layer than you are wearing to be comfortable. For the colder months, see our guide to dressing a baby for winter in Pakistan, and for the layer under the set, what to wear under a knit set. Check sizes on our size guide.

Quick answers

Is a knit set too warm for Karachi?

Not usually in Karachi’s winter. A light ribbed or waffle set over a short-sleeved bodysuit suits most days, with a cardigan for cool evenings.

What should my baby wear in spring in Lahore?

Layers you can peel off: a bodysuit, a light knit set and a cardigan in the morning, with the cardigan and perhaps the top off by the warm afternoon.

Can my baby wear just the joggers and a bodysuit?

Yes. On warm afternoons, taking the knit top off and leaving a bodysuit and joggers is an easy way to cool your baby down.

Which size should I buy for spring and autumn?

Think about the size your baby will be in during those months, not the size they are now. Our size guide and the chart by age and weight help you plan ahead.
