Why a second-baby gift is different

By the time a second or third baby arrives, most families already have the basics: a cupboard of vests and sleepsuits, a few going-out sets and a bag or two of hand-me-downs from the older child. Another random outfit risks joining a pile that is already too big, and it may never be worn before it is outgrown.

The most useful gift fills a gap. That means thinking about what the older child’s clothes don’t cover, what will have worn out since they were last used, and what this baby will want that is entirely their own. It takes a little more thought than a first-baby gift, but the parents will notice.

Look for the season gap

Hand-me-downs follow the older child’s birthday, not the new baby’s. If the first child was born in May, their newborn clothes are light pieces for the heat. A second baby born in November needs warm things in those same small sizes, and the family may have almost none of them.

You probably already know when the older sibling was born. If the new baby arrives in the opposite season, a warm layer such as the Cream Puppy Sherpa Hooded Jumpsuit or the Grey Bear Hooded Jumpsuit for a winter baby, or a light romper for a summer one, is likely to be worn constantly.

The same logic applies to the bigger sizes. An older child who reached 6–12 months in the heat will have passed down rompers, not knits, so a warm set in that size can be exactly what is missing.

Replace what wears out first

Some clothes survive one child beautifully; others don’t. Sleepsuits are worn day and night, so their knees, feet and poppers take the most wear, and milk stains around the neck rarely come out completely. Elastic in waistbands can loosen, and knits washed every other day lose their shape.

A fresh footed sleepsuit, like the Sky Blue Striped Elephant Footed Sleepsuit, is often more welcome than a party outfit. It is the kind of gift parents reach for at two in the morning and quietly appreciate.

Something that is only theirs

Younger siblings grow up in clothes that were someone else’s first. A piece with their own name on it says this one was chosen just for them, and it is often the piece that gets kept long after the rest are passed on. Name embroidery through our custom orders starts from Rs 500, with the exact price confirmed before anything is made.

Sizes and quantities

Second-time parents know how fast the first size goes, so skip 0–3 months unless you know it is needed. A 6–12 months piece fills the stretch where hand-me-downs often run thin, because the older child’s clothes in that size saw the most crawling, food and washing. Our post on moving up a size and what to count shows where the gaps usually appear.

One well-chosen piece is better than three that duplicate what is already in the cupboard. If you want to give more, split it: one thing that fits in the next few weeks, and one for the season after.

Don’t forget the older child

When a second baby comes home, the older child often watches every visitor walk straight past them to the cot. A small gift for the big brother or sister, handed to them first, makes the day easier for everyone.

Quick answers

Is it normal to give a gift for a second baby?

Yes. Every baby is welcomed, and many relatives give just as warmly the second time. The difference is that a thoughtful, gap-filling gift is noticed more than a general one.

Should I just ask what they need?

You can simply ask whether there is anything the new baby is short of. Second-time parents usually know exactly, and are glad someone asked rather than guessed.

Which size is best for a second baby’s gift?

Usually 6–12 months, or 3–6 months if the new baby is born in the opposite season to the older child. The first size is almost always covered by hand-me-downs and newborn gifts.

What if the new baby is a different sex from the first?

Most baby clothes in calm colours work for either, so parents rarely need a whole new wardrobe. A few new pieces in a style they like can still be a lovely gift.
