The honest answer

Babies change size quickly. Our baby sizes run 0–3M, 3–6M, 6–12M, 12–18M and 18–24M: narrow bands in the first months and wider ones later, because that is roughly how fast clothes stop fitting. So a fully custom outfit for a baby will usually be worn for a shorter time than one for a five-year-old.

That doesn’t make custom a waste. It means custom is worth it for particular reasons, not as the default for everyday clothes. The question to ask is: what does this piece need to do that a ready-made one can’t?

When custom is worth it

  • A specific occasion: an aqiqah, a first Eid, a wedding or a first birthday, where the outfit is part of the memory and the photos.
  • Matching: a baby piece made to coordinate with siblings or parents, which you can’t find ready-made.
  • Fit problems: a baby who is very long, very small or sturdier than standard sizes allow.
  • Particular needs: easy access for a medical device, extra-soft finishes for a baby who is easily irritated, or a specific opening for a cast.
  • A keepsake: something the family will fold away and keep, where the name and details matter more than months of wear.

When ready-made is the better buy

Everyday sleepsuits, rompers and play sets get washed constantly and outgrown fast. For these, a well-made ready piece in the right size is almost always the sensible choice. Our baby sets and rompers and sleepsuits are made for exactly this kind of daily wear, and our post on moving up a size helps you avoid over-buying.

Ready-made also wins when you need something quickly, or when you’re not sure what size your baby will be in by the time the weather changes. It is easier to buy the next size up in a ready piece than to plan a custom one around a growth spurt you can’t predict.

The middle path: customise something we already make

Between fully custom and plain ready-made, there is a third option that often suits babies best. Every product in our shop can be customised, so you can start from a piece you already like and change what matters. A name embroidered on the Oatmeal Teddy Ribbed Top & Jogger Set, for instance, turns an everyday set into something personal. Name embroidery starts from Rs 500.

Because the design is already worked out, there is less to decide and less that can go wrong. You are choosing a size from a known range rather than sending a full set of measurements.

Getting more wear from a custom baby piece

  • Size for when it will be worn most, not just the day of the event. A 6–12M piece ordered for a 5-month-old will last longer than a 3–6M one.
  • Ask for adjustable features: elastic waists, snaps at the shoulders or legs, turned-up hems that can be let down.
  • Pick a colour that works beyond the occasion. A soft sage like our Sage Waffle-Knit Henley & Jogger Set looks right at a family event and on an ordinary Tuesday.
  • Put the name somewhere small, so the piece still suits a younger cousin later, or choose initials that can be handed down within the family.

Making the decision

If the piece is for an occasion, a fit problem or a keepsake, custom is usually worth it. If it is for the everyday pile, buy ready-made and spend the difference on another size up. When you are unsure, send your idea through our custom request page and ask; we confirm the exact price and making time before you commit. More ideas are in our custom stitching posts.

Quick answers

Should I get a newborn’s aqiqah outfit custom made?

Many families do, because it is a one-off occasion with photos. Choose a size with a little room, since newborns grow fast and the exact date can shift.

Is it cheaper to customise one of your products than to order something new?

Often it is simpler, because the design and sizes already exist. The exact price depends on the change, and we confirm it when you ask.

What size should I order for a custom baby outfit?

Base it on the baby’s age and length on the day it will be worn, then go up if they are near the top of a size. Our size guide shows the ranges.

Is a custom outfit a good gift for a new baby?

It can be, especially with a name added. Choose a size or two ahead of the baby’s current age so it fits when the family wants to use it, and keep the design soft and easy to put on.
