Why the name often isn’t known yet

Personalised gifts and baby names don’t always arrive on the same schedule. A godh bharai or baby shower happens before the birth. Many families keep the chosen name private until the baby arrives, and some wait until the aqiqah, often held around the seventh day, to announce it, though customs vary between families. Even when the name is shared, the English spelling may still be undecided.

Embroidering a guessed or half-confirmed name is the one mistake that can’t be fixed with an exchange. Happily, there are lovely personal designs that don’t need a name at all.

Designs that don’t need a name

Short phrases for baby clothes work best: a few words sit neatly on a small piece.

  • A motif: a teddy, crescent, elephant or star, chosen to suit the season the baby will be born in.
  • A family title: Dada’s jaan, Nani’s pari, or Little brother or Little sister if there is already an older child.
  • A welcome: Hello world, Just arrived, or Pehli Eid if the baby will be tiny at Eid time.
  • The birth year, or the city: Born in 2026, Made in Lahore.
  • A single initial, but only if the parents have shared it directly with you.
  • A shirt-style number: 01 for a first baby, 02 for a second.

When you don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl

Many families don’t share this before the birth either. Neutral colours take the guesswork out: sage, oatmeal, cream, charcoal and soft grey suit any baby. Our Oatmeal Teddy Ribbed Top & Jogger Set already has an embroidered teddy, and the Sage Waffle-Knit Henley & Jogger Set has a patch pocket that suits a small motif. Pair them with thread in navy, cream, chocolate or forest green.

Giving the name later

If you have your heart set on a named gift, split it in two. Give a small unnamed piece, or a card, at the shower or first visit, saying that a named outfit will follow. Once the family announces the name, confirm the spelling in writing and order the embroidered piece then. It shows real thought, and the named outfit arrives when the baby has grown into a bigger size, which is often more useful anyway.

Choosing the size

Newborns are often given far more 0–3 month clothes than they can wear. A gift in 3–6 or 6–12 months is usually more welcome, and it gives a personalised piece a longer life. Think about the season too: a cosy winter set in 6–12 months for a baby born in autumn will fit in the middle of the following summer, when it won’t be needed. Our size guide helps you choose the size.

Quick answers

Is it rude to ask the parents the baby’s name for a gift?

Not if you ask kindly and accept a “not yet”. Some families prefer to keep it private until the aqiqah or a later announcement, and a name-free design respects that.

Can I order embroidery with just the first initial?

Yes, if the parents have confirmed it. A single initial in a small frame is a neat, safe choice when the full spelling isn’t settled.

What’s a good personalised gift for a godh bharai?

A neutral set in 3–6 or 6–12 months with a motif or family title, such as Nani’s jaan, rather than a name.

Can the gift be exchanged if it doesn’t fit?

Our exchanges are for unused pieces in original condition within 7 days, with the original bill. For a personalised piece, ask us before ordering and check the size carefully, as it is made for one child.
