What makes a motif work at baby size

A motif on a baby’s outfit is usually a few centimetres across, and at that size simplicity wins. The best motifs have a shape you can recognise from its outline alone: a crescent, a star, a teddy’s round head and ears, a car’s body and two wheels. They use two or three thread colours, not ten. Fine details such as eyelashes, tiny text or shading either get lost or are simplified when stitched.

A useful test: draw the motif as a solid silhouette with a marker. If you can still tell what it is, it will embroider well.

Ideas by theme

  • Animals: teddy, elephant, bunny, duck, lion face, puppy, whale.
  • Sky: crescent moon, stars, cloud, sun, rainbow.
  • Things that move: car, sailboat, aeroplane, train, hot-air balloon.
  • Nature: leaf, flower, tree, mushroom, strawberry.
  • Close to home: a mango, a rickshaw, a chinar leaf, or a single flower in the style of truck art, simplified to a few colours.
  • Milestones: a small number for a birthday or a crescent for a first Eid.

Take a cue from the outfit

The nicest motifs feel like part of the outfit rather than a sticker on top of it. Look at what the piece already has. Our Cream & Blue Striped Car Polo Romper already carries an embroidered car, so a name alone suits it better than a second vehicle. The Sky Blue Sailboat Polo Romper has sailboats and a teddy, so a small star or a wave keeps the seaside feel without repeating either. The Sky Blue Striped Elephant Footed Sleepsuit has an elephant with gold stars, which makes a gold star beside the name an easy match.

On plain pieces you have a free hand, so choose by the colours of the fabric and the season: a moon and stars for a winter sleepsuit, a sun or strawberry for summer.

Size and placement

A motif’s size is set by where it goes. On the chest of a small baby’s top, a few centimetres is plenty; any bigger and it runs into the neckline, buttons or snaps. A cuff or collar takes something tiny, such as a single star. The back of a jumpsuit, a dungaree bib or the front of a sweatshirt can carry a much larger design, which is where detailed animals or scenes have room to work.

Motifs that are harder than they look

  • Detailed faces: at a small size, eyes and smiles can end up lopsided. Simple dots and a curved line work best.
  • Gradients and shading: embroidery works in solid blocks of colour, so blends become stripes.
  • Text inside the motif: a word inside a balloon or heart needs a much larger design to stay readable.
  • Well-known cartoon characters: these belong to their creators, so a custom piece is better built around an original animal in the colours your child loves.

Stitched, appliquéd or patched?

A motif can be stitched directly onto the fabric, cut from fabric and sewn on as appliqué, or made as a separate patch. Each looks and wears differently; appliqué gives bigger shapes a soft, flat feel, while direct embroidery suits small, crisp details.

Ordering a motif

Send a picture or a simple sketch of the motif, the colours you want, and where it should go, through our custom orders page or on WhatsApp. Name embroidery starts from Rs 500; a detailed or multi-colour motif takes more stitching, so the price and making time are confirmed when you ask. If it is a present, our baby gift ideas help you choose the garment first.

Quick answers

How big should a motif be on baby clothes?

Small chest motifs are usually a few centimetres across. Bigger designs suit the back of a garment or a dungaree bib, where there is flat space.

Can I send my own drawing as a motif?

Yes. A clear, simple drawing works well; we will tell you if any details need simplifying to stitch cleanly at the size you want.

Are motifs better than names for gifts?

They are safer when you don’t know the name or its spelling, and they suit families who prefer not to show a child’s name in public.

Can an older sibling’s drawing become the motif?

Yes, and it makes a touching gift for a new baby. Choose a drawing with clear outlines and just a few colours, and send a sharp photo of it.
