Planning clothes for a winter-born baby in Pakistan
For babies born between November and February: why warm first-size clothes have a short life, when the second winter comes, and how to spread the spending.
The first two years at a glance
Going by the months on the label, a baby born in December would usually wear:
- 0–3 months from December to February, the coldest weeks of the year.
- 3–6 months from March to May, as spring turns quickly into heat.
- 6–12 months from June to November: summer, monsoon and autumn.
- 12–18 months from December to May: the second winter and spring.
- 18–24 months from June to November: another summer.
The newborn winter wardrobe has a short life
A winter baby needs a proper warm wardrobe from day one: warm footed sleepsuits like the Sky Blue Teddy & Stars Footed Sleepsuit, long-sleeved bodysuits, cardigans and an outer layer for going out. The catch is that all of it is in 0–3 months, and by the time the weather warms up, it will be too small. None of it will fit next winter.
So keep this size lean. In the first weeks, most babies spend nearly all their time indoors, so the outer layer may get less use than you expect. This is the size where borrowing a jumpsuit from a cousin, or accepting a good hand-me-down, makes the most sense. Our guide on dressing a baby for winter in Pakistan covers how to layer indoors and out.
What a winter newborn can do without
- More than one outer layer. A single jumpsuit or snowsuit covers the few outings most newborns make.
- Thick knit sets in 0–3 months beyond one or two for visitors. Warm sleepsuits with a cardigan do the same job and are easier to change.
- Special winter night clothes beyond warm sleepsuits. Our guide on dressing a baby for winter in Pakistan covers what is actually needed at night.
- Any summer clothes in 0–3 months, however lovely the gift. Pass them to a baby born in the heat.
3–6 months: plan for a fast change
March can still be chilly in the north and in Punjab, but by April most of the country is warm and by May it is hot. Buy two or three long-sleeved sets and a cardigan for the start of this size, and put the rest into lighter pieces. If you live in Karachi, you can go light almost straight away.
6–12 months: the easy size
For a winter baby, 6–12 months falls across summer, the monsoon and autumn. Almost nothing warm is needed: rompers, light two-piece sets and bodysuits carry you through, with a couple of long-sleeved layers for cool November evenings. This is usually the lightest size on the budget, which is useful, because the next one is not.
12–18 months: the big warm size
The second winter lands in 12–18 months, and it is the one where warm clothes really earn their keep. Your child is now walking, going outside more and staying out longer. This is the size to invest in knit sets such as the Charcoal Waffle-Knit Henley & Jogger Set, sweatshirt sets like the Sky Blue Dinosaur Sweatshirt & Grey Jogger Set, and a good outer layer such as the Cream Puppy Sherpa Hooded Jumpsuit.
Before buying, check your child’s height against our size guide. Some one-year-olds are already in 18–24 months, and buying the right size for December matters more than the label on their birthday.
A good fit for hand-me-downs
If you plan more children, clothes from a winter-born baby pass most neatly to another baby born in the cold months, because the sizes land in the same seasons. If your next baby is born in summer, the match is much worse.
Quick answers
How many warm clothes does a winter newborn need?
Enough to get through the washing cycle in the cold months, which for most families means several warm sleepsuits, a couple of cardigans and one outer layer. Keep it lean, because none of it will fit next winter.
Should I buy 3–6 month clothes warm or light for a December baby?
Mostly light, with two or three long-sleeved pieces for March. By April most of Pakistan is warm.
When should I buy clothes for the second winter?
Around October or November, once you can see which size your child is in. Buying earlier risks getting the size wrong.
Is a January baby different from a December one?
Only slightly. A January baby’s 0–3 months runs into March, so the first size needs a few more lighter pieces for the end, and the sizes after shift by a month.
