Why details matter more than the print

Every parent has a set that looked lovely in the shop and stayed in the drawer, usually because it was a struggle to get on, slipped down, or rode up. The sets that get worn week after week tend to share the same handful of practical details. Look for them before you think about colour or print, and you will rarely be disappointed.

It also helps to think about who will be dressing your baby. A set that you can manage easily may defeat a grandparent in a hurry, so simple, forgiving details are worth more than clever ones.

A neck opening that clears the head

A baby’s head is large for their body, and many babies protest loudly when fabric covers their face. The top needs some way to open wider than a plain round neck. The two common answers are a henley placket, the short row of buttons below the neckline on our Charcoal Waffle-Knit Henley & Jogger Set, and shoulder buttons, as on our Oatmeal Teddy Ribbed Top & Jogger Set. A crew neck with plenty of stretch can work too, especially for older babies.

A waistband that stays put without digging

  • Soft and reasonably wide, so pressure is spread across the tummy rather than concentrated in a thin line.
  • Ribbed or covered elastic, with no bare elastic touching the skin.
  • The same softness all the way round, with no hard seam or label pressing into the back when your baby lies down.
  • Enough stretch to pull over a nappy without a fight.
  • A drawstring on some joggers, which lets you fine-tune the fit.

Cuffs, length and overlap

These three details work together. Cuffs hold the ends in place, the overlap keeps the middle covered, and the back rise stops the waistband creeping down. A set that gets all three right will stay neat through a morning of play without constant tugging and tucking.

  • Ribbed cuffs at the wrists and ankles keep sleeves and legs in place when your baby kicks and crawls, and they can be folded back while your baby grows into a bigger size.
  • The top should overlap the waistband by a few centimetres when your baby lifts their arms. If a gap opens straight away, the top is too short or the joggers sit too low.
  • A slightly deeper rise at the back of the joggers covers the nappy when your baby sits or crawls.

Nice to have, not essential

  • Pockets: the grey joggers in our Sky Blue Dinosaur Sweatshirt & Grey Jogger Set have them. Toddlers love stuffing treasures in pockets, so empty them before washing.
  • A chest patch pocket on a henley is mostly decorative on a baby, but it gives the top a neat, grown-up look for visits.
  • Embroidery and appliqué, such as a teddy on the chest. Turn these pieces inside out to wash them.
  • Buttons that are decorative rather than working. Check which is which before you try to undo them on a wriggling baby.

Checking a set before you order

On a product page, look closely at the photos of the neckline, cuffs and waistband, and read which details are listed. Fabric content matters too: on our site the charcoal set is confirmed as wool, while the fabric of other pieces is still being confirmed, so ask us on WhatsApp if you need to know before ordering. Then check your baby’s measurements against our size guide so the set fits the way it was designed to.

Quick answers

What is the most important feature of a baby jogger set?

An easy neck opening, closely followed by a comfortable waistband. If the top is a battle to get on or the joggers won’t stay up, the set won’t get worn, however nice it looks.

Are pockets on baby joggers useful?

Not much for young babies, but toddlers enjoy them. They add a little bulk, so for a baby who spends a lot of time lying down, plain joggers are just as good.

Should a baby set have buttons?

Buttons at the neck or shoulders make the top easier to get on. Look for ones you can undo with one hand, because the other hand is usually holding your baby.

Is a two-piece set worth it for a baby under six months?

Yes, if it has an easy neck opening and a soft waistband. Younger babies spend a lot of time lying on their backs, so choose a set without bulky details at the back.
