A size chart for children’s kurtas, kameez and shalwars from 0–3 months to 11–12 years, with height, weight, chest and waist in cm and inches.
How eastern wear sizes work
Children’s kurtas and kameez are sized by age, but every brand’s age labels mean something slightly different. The reliable way to choose is to compare your child’s measurements with the garment’s chest and length, not the age on the label.
Pakistani shops often use numeric sizes (20, 22, 24 and so on). These roughly follow the chest measurement in inches, so a size 22 fits a chest of about 22 inches, which is usually a 2–3 year old. Our sizes are labelled by age and the table below shows the measurements behind each one.

Measurements of your child’s body, not of the garment. They follow standard international children’s sizing.
Which measurement matters most
- Kameez, kurta and kurti: chest first, then length. A kurta usually ends just above the knee; a kameez between mid-thigh and the knee; a kurti at the hip.
- Shalwar and pajama: length from the waist to the ankle. Waists are elasticated, so they fit a range.
- Frocks and lehengas: chest for the bodice or choli, then the length you want.
- Sherwani, prince coat and waistcoat: chest, with room for the kurta underneath.
Between sizes?
Choose the larger size. Eastern wear is easy to take up at the hem, and children grow into a kurta far faster than they grow out of one. If you’re ordering for an event more than two months away, size up.
Quick answers
What size kurta is a 5 year old?
Most five-year-olds wear a 4–5Y or 5–6Y, which fits a height of about 104–116 cm and a chest of about 55–59 cm (21.5–23 inches). Check their height and chest first: they matter more than the age.
What does size 22 mean in Pakistani kids’ clothes?
Numeric sizes usually follow the garment’s own chest measurement in inches. A size 22 kurta measures about 22 inches (56 cm) around the chest, which, with room to move, usually fits a 2–3 year old.
Should I buy eastern wear a size bigger?
If your child is between sizes or the event is a couple of months away, yes. Kurtas and shalwars can be taken up at the hem, and elasticated waists fit a range.
