How to dress a baby for winter

Dress your baby in thin layers rather than one thick piece: a soft bodysuit next to the skin, a knit set or sleepsuit over it, and a hooded jumpsuit for going out. Layers trap warm air and come off easily in a heated room or a warm car.

A common rule from the NHS and the American Academy of Pediatrics is one more layer than you are wearing yourself in the same place. Check the back of the neck or the chest: if it feels hot or sweaty, take a layer off. Cold hands on their own are normal.

What to look for in winter babywear

These details keep warmth in without making changes harder:

  • Ribbed cuffs at the wrists and ankles, so sleeves and legs don't ride up while they crawl.
  • Covered feet, on our footed sleepsuits and the sherpa jumpsuit, so there are no socks to lose.
  • A hood for going out. Take it down, and take hats off, once you are indoors, and never use one for sleep.
  • A full-length zip, on both jumpsuits, for a quick change in a cold room.

Winter across Pakistan

Winter means very different things in Karachi and in Quetta. In Lahore and much of Punjab, smog usually peaks from November to mid-December, so many babies spend more time indoors, and a heated room needs fewer layers, not more. For a fuller city-by-city guide, see how to dress your baby for winter in Pakistan.

Sizing for winter

Choose the size by your baby's length and weight in the size guide, not by age alone. If they are between sizes, go up one: there is room for a bodysuit underneath and the cuffs can be turned back. A baby born in October may well move up a size before the coldest weeks in January, so buy for the size they will be in December and January.

Questions parents ask

When should I switch my baby to winter clothes?

A practical rule of thumb (ours, not a medical one): when night-time temperatures where you live drop to around 15 °C. That usually comes first in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, then in Lahore and most of Punjab, and last in Karachi.

Is wool OK for a baby?

Wool is warm, but some babies with sensitive or eczema-prone skin find it itchy. A soft layer underneath, such as a cotton bodysuit, helps. Our Charcoal Waffle-Knit set is wool; ask us about any other piece before you order.

Can I add my baby's name to a winter set?

Yes. Name embroidery starts from Rs 500. Ask on the customise page or on WhatsApp.

How much is delivery?

Delivery is free in Pakistan on orders over Rs 3,000. See delivery, payment and exchanges for the rest.
